Glacier ski-ing

My friends and I skied in the winter, but that wasn't enough for us. We wanted to ski in summer too. So, we hiked to the top of glaciers and then skied down. These glaciers are just ice. No snow. Talk about a wild ride!! The photo is a slide that I scanned with my Micky Mouse slide scanner (not really Mickey Mouse, just primitive). These are my skis, poles and gloves. We're getting ready to go. I must have been nuts!!!

Thanks for the comments folks. It was a rush alright! There was a 50 foot drop off at the bottom of the glacier. At the base of the glacier was a nice field of boulders. Since it was ice, it was very difficult to stop. The skiis slid sideways just as well as forward. I can remember being terrified, but doing it over and over again anyway.

I can't believe I was actually able to do this. The elevation was 11,000 to 12,000 feet. Anyone who has done any kind of work at that altitude knows that it is exhausting. We had to wear hiking boots going up the glacier and carry our ski boots, skiis and poles. Then, when we skied down, we had to sling our hiking boots around our necks. Obviously, I was also burdened with a camera. As I said before, I can't believe I did that!

Great shot Gary,it sure does look like a rush skiing down that run.

Terrific photo, Gary. The first time I tried skiining - in Switzerland when I was 11, the weather was unseasonably warm and the Bunny Slopes were ice - what you experienced must have been hair-raising in contrast!

I'm glad those gloves didn't belong to an unfortunate victum! Great contrast between the dry mountains and the ice.
