Hawk - For Nova -

Red Tailed Hawk soaring on thermals near The Bluff, Taken near home.

the Red Tailed Hawks shown in my bird book appear to have a lighter underbody, but there are variations. If this is not a Red Tailed Hawk, would appreciate if someone will let me know, thanks : )

many thanks, Anne, glad you found this one and like it. It was a lovely sight to watch it soaring.

thanks Talsi for the nice comments. I kept hoping one would come to the patio, as they do sometimes in winter, but know what you mean re the songbirds. We had a red tailed hawk kill a band tailed pigeon in our backyard years ago, during some snowy weather

Awesome photo. Great capture of the spread of wings. We do have red tailed hawks here in WNC, but I have never even tried to photograph them. Too far away for my camera and lens. But one time I did get to enjoy watching one out my kitchen window come swooping down to get one of the little birds at my feeder. It was quite a sight to see, fortunately it did not get one of my birds.

thanks very much, Janice and May for the nice comments. Interesting about the red tail that you had for a year, May. I'd like to read the story about her.

Exquisite. I had a red tail for nearly a year and eventually she was rehabbed correctly and released in the canyons of n. LA County at a wildlife preserve. I called her Nova. Her story's in my book.

That is a better than WOW. You could see every feather or vein in the feathers. Such a wing span. Our new professional photographer.

thanks very much Karen for the great comments : ) Have been reading the bird books, and there is mention of a "dark belly band" on the Red Tails, and I can see this dark band in this shot, and more clearly in another I have. So maybe it's just slightly diff. markings up here : ) I wish Austin was around : )

Wow, this is beautiful. Incredible color and feather detail. Our redtails do have a light underbelly.
