Owl - Spotted Owl in the Wild

not sure which type of Owl this is? Will have to check. Just took the pics half an hour ago, a few minutes from home. We had not realized owls were in the area at the water tower, my husband saw it there this morning when dog walking and returned to tell me, so we went back there and captured some shots.

thanks Karen, it was lucky to get these shots of this owl, as have never seen it since, and had never seen it before. DH saw it once after this.

This is beautiful. You even got the light shining in its eyes. Amazing how many owls you see. We have some but they only come out at night.

appreciate your nice comments, Tania, thankyou. This was a "once only" chance, with the owl not that high in the tree, and he stayed there while I took lots of pics.

DH had seen the owl first, when he walked the dogs earlier, then he came home and told me and we rushed back up there, hoping the owl would be in the same place, which he was. I've never seen it again, but DH saw it once since.

This is a great shot of a regal bird. I love how he is looking straight at you almost giving his permission for the photo.

This is excellent, Alandra - nicely captured. It definitely isn't a Barred Owl, though I see why you thought it might be. That stripe at the top of its head may be a good clue towards finding out!

Who gives a hoot what man calls the owl? I call this a wise shot and a great one.

now believe this to be a Spotted Owl, after looking in a bird book last evening. According to the guide book, Spotted Owls are in our area, whereas Barred Owls are not. I think the Spotted Owls are not seen that often here tho'. My husband saw the owl once again after that pic was taken, but I haven't seen it since.

thanks Alex D, Tam, Crossroads, Carol and Whittler for the comments. Alex D, thanks for checking, - had a feeling it might be a Barred Owl, from what I recalled of owl pics that Vicki showed earlier. Have just checked that on google, and it does seem to be a Barred Owl. So until anyone corrects this, will name it as that. It's not a very big owl, compared to the Great Horned owls in the other area.

Great shot. I have been checking this myself, and have no definitive choice. Appears closest to a Great Gray, however misses the yellow eyes and long tail (Can't tell for sure, from this photo, but tail appears to end rather short. Also could this be redeye from use of a flash?)

Possibly could be an immature owl, which would make identification more challenging. Please let us know when you find out.
