Locking Through

While getting ready to head to Virginia today I discovered a camera I thought I lost in Northern Michigan last summer - with 96 photos - many of the Soo Locks and some my daughter will be thrilled to see as she graduated college there in 1996. Watching the ocean freighters and sea-going ships pass through the Soo Locks is something I never get tired of. It's hard to believe there's a 53' drop between the levels of Lake Huron and Lake Superior.

I bet she enjoyed going down the St Lawrence Seaway, Alandra - that would be quite a trip - all those locks to go through!

finally getting round to commenting on this one, Vicki. Goes without saying that it was also very interesting to me. Have never been through any locks, but they fascinate me, and have watched tv shows about them. There's that song about the Edmund Fitzgerald, right. Is that Gordon Lightfoot who sings that one? Happy for you re finding the camera and all those pics! Would love to take one of those Great Lakes cruises. Aren't the Great Lakes considered one of the Wonders of the Modern World? My mum travelled down the St Lawrence Seaway enroute to England years ago, (ocean liner) and loved that.

Thank you both. The background photo is actually the deck of the same ship - once the water drains from the lock, the deck of the ships aare actually BELOW the lock ledge where the ships are tied up.

Gary, there are now Great Lakes cruises that are supposed to be quite exciting. Lake Superior is the most wicked of the Great Lakes and is home to some of the world's worst weather-related shipwrecks (such as the Edmund Fitzgerald).

You would enjoy touring both the US and Canada around the Lakes.

Very interesting. I have never traveled on a big ship. Always wanted to. The Great Lakes region I think would be fascinating.
