LUNA hibiscus

LUNA hibiscus

we were amazed to see the size of these Luna hibiscus blooms this morning! - first blooms on 2 plants in pots on patio. The flowers looked cup like at first, but then flattened out, and as the day has progressed, they are even larger, approx 8 inches across and the centre stamen has lengthened also. Loads more buds to open too : )

Hi Connie, that's a good price for the Luna hibiscus, can't recall what price ours were, as it was a few years ago now, but am pretty sure it was more than $5. They're really nice, huge flowers.

Luna Hibiscus (swamp mallow) grows wild here along highways. Just bought a luna at WalMart. Was on sale for $5.00. Is that a good deal? they have more.

I purchased a luna about 6 weeks ago in N.C. and the blooms for 4 weeks in N.C. were magnificent and abundant. I now have the same plant in Florida and live by the ocean. The plant is not doing so well, it is in a pot and it seems that the salt air may be preventing it from opening as wide as it did in N.C. I am considering moving it indoors, since it is one of the most breathtaking plants I have owned.

I have had one for 3 years. Leave outside all the time. Cut back to 6

inches in fall, comes back every spring. Fertilize 3 times a year. Blooms are 9 inches in diameter

quite awhile since anyone commented on this one, so thanks very much, Tania. It's one of my older entries. Am hoping to get a light coloured one of these this summer.

Yes, the blooms are an amazing size! we brought ours inside last winter, and your winters are colder than ours. We transplanted ours to larger pots soon after we bought them, and kept them in pots. It states on the tag, to fertilize if the leaves turn a paler colour. We should have pruned in the spring, as the blooms were not as large the 2nd year. We just water them when they need it. Best bet is to ask the garden center in your region. Good luck with yours. Which colour did you buy? I want one of the paler ones next time.

Just bought one of these...it says on the tage that it's a perennial, good to zone 5 which is here...I was stunned by the huge flowers...what a display! Do you have any advice on care e.g. watering frequency, fertilizer, pruning, etc.?

Melissa, think I left a reply to yours on the other photo of this plant, hope you saw it. Wanted to let you know that I hope you and Leah enjoy your plants, am sure you will, the flowers are stunning. Next year I'll get a pale pink one for sure : )

we had a few flowers the 2nd year from one of the plants, - but they were not as large as the first year, probably our faults tho', as we should have cut the plant back in the spring, I believe. We kept ours inside all winter, as we are in British Columbia, Canada, and altho it's mild here most winters, we do get cooler weather sometimes.

I just bought 4 of these plants, 2 red ones, and 2 of the lighter color, white with a splash of pink. They are gorgeous plants. Very huge blooms.

Yes, this plant has really stunning flowers, am thinking it would be nice to have one with the paler coloured flowers this summer, for a change. If we get one, will send in some pics of the different coloured flowers : )
