Tower of London

Old castle (1000 years) on the banks of the Thames. I have an aerial shot of this castle on The Lens Flare, so you can compare these very different perspectives!

Mike - I'm so glad Steve showed this again. I had not seen your contribution and it is very interesting. May the ravens always fly and make their homes in England. Anne

Thanks Steve for the added history. I love to read and many novels set their scene in these history laden places. I think I learned more history that way than from our history books. *g* Do you ever do lectures with your pictures - for the schools? Thanks for showing them here. Anne

Thanks Beverly and Mike for your comments. I'm not sure Mike if, after 900 years, there's any real distinction between the Normans and us! We've got half their language for starters!

Thanks Anne! You're right on both counts. Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower from 1603 to 1616. He was only one of many famous "residents". It's also the case that prisoners were brought by boat and entered the castle by what's known as "traitors' gate". You can just see the tip of the arch of this gate at the very bottom of the bit of the castle nearest the river, just below three windows.

What a magnificent view of this castle. Is it the one where Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned among several others? I have read that some of the prisioners were taken there in a boat. This is a beautiful picture of The Tower of London. A real treat to see it. Thank you.
