Late Night Lightning

Late Night Lightning

Just a little before midnight the thunder woke me up. Well being a total photo nut, I threw on some cloths and was outside taking photos in less than five minuets. We don't get a lot of great lightning shows out here in the desert so I was a tad rusty on what settings to use. The lightning always seems to attack the mountains and leaves all the houses down in the valley alone. This lighting was hitting the mountains that are around 15 miles away from my home.

Thanks Carol, what can I say I enjoy taking lightning and don't think it is any more dangerous than driving a car or flying.. Thanks Lisha, I'm glad you also liked my photo. Hey Alandra I really don't know what to tell you about the 50mm lens. They are the best lens for sharpness and great for using in low light. Mine is the cheapest one you can buy and it takes great photos. Here is a page that explains the 50mm lens pretty good. You need to copy the link and add the h t t p: for this link.

//vothphoto.com/spotlight/articles/forgotten_lens/forgotten-lens.htm Do a Google search, there is a lot of information about the 50mm lens. The 50mm is a fast lens and you need to make sure your focusing is right on. Hope this helps you some.

Hi Alan, about the 50 mm lens. I got one of those awhile back, and don't find it sharp at all. Mine is a II series, maybe that's the problem, I dunno. I hardly ever use mine as wasn't happy with the way the images turned out.

Hi Alex, Beverly, and Commodore for your wonderful comments. Sorry about the really slow reply, I just can't keep up :) Yea I'm a little crazy but I just can't help it. When the lightning is flashing I have to take some photos of it.

Awesome picture of the lightning. I like how you show the city night lights in it.

Thanks very much Mary, Alandra, Brian, and Vicki for your wonderful comments..

Vicki about your ISO question when taking lightning you need to use a long shutter speed to have a better chance of catching a lightning bolt. So setting the ISO to 100 lets you do that. When using a tripod and the focus set you can use the slow ISO no problem.

What also helped a lot was the 50mm lens. A cheap $70.00 50mm lens will take sharper photos than any zoom lens, well unless you spend thousands of dollars on a high end professional lens. If you don't have a 50mm lens get one, you will be amazed.
