Oregon Trail Wagon Ruts

Oregon Trail Wagon Ruts

There's no fee to walk along these ruts our forebears created on their arduous westward journeys in the late 1700 and early 1800s.

At nearby Remembrance Rock is a geneologists delight - beautifully carved names and crossing dates are well-preserved in the sandstone.

Anne, you're right. Hearing about our forefathers' long treks

across this amazing continent is one thing. To actually

stand in their tracks is an awesome feeling. These tracks are

on National Guard property, but are open to everyone. There is

a huge parking lot with plenty of room for large RVs to park.

The location is marked by one of those little red square

'point of interest' dots on state and country maps. I stopped

there on a whim - and, to coin Alex (Whittler), all I felt

was 'WOW"! Vicki

I loved this picture. I have read so many books about the settlers going west. And some of my own relatives went to Washington State years ago. It is like standing on sacred ground to see the ruts worn down by our ancestors going "Westward, HO!!" I even got goose bumps just looking at this and thinking of those grand and wonderfully brave settlers heading out for the unknown in their wagons. What great faith they had. Thanks for such a wonderful picture of our history!!

Remembrance Rock is well-preserved - fortunately - it would take quite awhile to read all the names and dates

Thank you Carol. I had no idea what I was going to see when I turned down that road last year - OH NO! I just noticed - I took it in 2004 - that's two I did that to now!!!

It's near Gillette, Wyoming and there's no charge to see it - plenty of parking for RVs and a short walk up to the ruts. It really humbles you to walk in their shoes for a little while.

Thank you for your comments,

Vicki
