Blue Jay & Open Beakfull (Steller's Jay)

here's that greedy Steller's Jay again, with a large acorn in his beak. There's also a dandelion seed on his face : )

We watch them sorting thru the acorns, looking for the smaller ones that they can swallow whole, then they fly off with them. Am not sure if they are eating the acorns or hiding them for later.

many thanks, Tania. One visited our front feeder a couple days ago, first time that we've seen any of the stellars jays here for a long time. but it hasn't been back since, that I'm aware of.

Hi Alan, - know what you mean tho', as we do buy other bird seed and have spent a lot on that and "bird grade" peanuts for the wildlife for many winters now. So that's why the acorns found locally were a nice surprise lately, as those jays go thru peanuts like crazy. Do you make your own hummingbird nectar? - incase you don't know, the ratio most like the nectar in flowers, is 4 parts boiled water (cooled) to 1 part regular sugar. At least, that's whats recommended in this area. When the weather's colder tho, in springtime, we lower the amount of water.

I forget you lucky people live where you can find food laying around on the ground. Here in Arizona anything on the ground is brown and fried LOL.. I think we spend around twenty dollars a month on wild bird seed and now Hummingbird nectar :)

thanks for the nice comments, Alan. But we haven't paid anything for the acorns : ) we just gathered them locally for free. We should go and get more too, as we're almost out of them.
