Hyacinth Macaw

This Hyacinth Macaw is enjoying some attention from the handler. It is a rare and endangered macaw with its distinctive deep blue cobalt plummage. It is about 36-40 inches in height and weighs about 2.5 lbs. The birds mate and live in family groups nesting in Maduvi Trees and cliffs. Hyacinth Macaws have very strong beaks and there calls are very loud and can be heard up to a kilometer away. It has the distinction of being the largest parrot in the world and is native to South America. There are only about 2500 to 5000 left in the wild and because of the price these birds can be sold for they are trapped and smuggled illegally.
