Hummingbird displaying tail spots

this is another view of the hummingbird that visited one of our garden fountains earlier this year (end of May 2004)

It is displaying the white spots on its tail here. Believe only the female Rufous, Anna's and Allen's hummingbirds have the white spots on the tips of their tail feathers, and it's very difficult to tell the female Allens and Rufous females apart.

Apparently they display these white spots to show other hummers that a certain nectar feeder etc is "their territory".

Absolutely beautiful as well as stunning - the pose as well as the bird. I felt I had made a connection with the bird.

Hi Austin, thanks for jogging my memory about adding my bird shots to the "bird" sub categories. The reason these weren't put in there initially, is that the sub categories weren't available when they were first uploaded : ) --these were submitted almost a year ago now. Have to add all my flower macros etc also to the sub cats!

The hummers are back again this season, at least, we have seen a very colourful Rufous male in our front patio area, and the nectar feeders are out. My DH has been working out front lately, renovating the "stream" running into the little pond, - and the hummer divebombed him as he was working, trying to make DH go indoors so that he could drink his sugar/water nectar : )

Nice shot. I couldn't help but notice your bird photos don't show up in the bird folders.

When uploading them you should look for the box labeled. subcat - animal - Avian / Bird
