Mel great capture. I love that part of town. when I was alot younger an elderly neighbour of ours would show old photos of Napier immediately after the 1931 earthquake it was horrific. What the earthquake didn't destroy the fire that followed did. the large hospital on the hill in the background is where I was born. Sad it is not being used as a hospital. but it is slowly being fixed up and used as accommodation and offices.

More comments - I need to add the big Hospital on the Napier Hill may not be a hospital anymore but I think it is used as accommodation and offices.

Before the hospital was built - somebody thought it would be a good place to nurse the sick (it has an awesome view)- thinking the view would help the sick recover more quickly.

Hawkes Bay Main Hospital is now in Hastings.

I forgot to mention that I have been inside this building for a conference last year. It is lovely inside and reminds me of my old house built at a similar time. It is great that we have places like this to remind us what our country and cities were once like.

Thanks Alandra adn Lulu for your comments. I was too tired yesterday to write full comments on my photo's - you will see I have added to my description about the history of this building and the area. I took this photo about 3 weeks ago when Paul, Hamish and I went for a walk around the wharf. Hamish just loves boats - like his Mum Dad, and Granddad Ian.

After all that, I forgot to comment on the photo. Mel, this is great. I love the contrast of the old with the new (not that the hospital on the hill is used anymore). I also really like the use of the boat. Really neat!

Alandra, Napier is only 20 minutes from where we live. A beautiful place. Both Napier and Hastings (our city) were destroyed in 1931 by and earthquake. As a result, most of our buildings have an Art Deco look to them and Napier is the Art Deco captial of New Zealand. Hastings rebuilt in the Spanish Mission style and as a result we have a spanish festival each year (fiesta espanola) and this is one chance Bianca gets to show off her Flamenco dancing skills. Just a little bit of geography with some history thrown in for you.

this has jogged my memory about Napier. Am trying to recall where I heard the name in NZ before. One of my friends over there must have mentioned Napier in their travels.
