Hawk with foot showing thru belly feathers

hawk in a tree above our garage, with one foot sticking out from its belly feathers. Guess its feet were cold, - it was quite chilly this afternoon after a lovely mild morning.

haven't seen the hawk around here for sometime now, was just thinking of this a few days ago. For awhile there he was hunting on our property quite often. He'll be back again soon, once the weather cools down more.

The Cooper Hawks show up behind where I live this time of the year - they mate - stay for a couple of weeks and are gone for another year. How often do you see the hawks by your place?

thanks for the nice comments, Susan. yes the hawk is a handsome fella/gal -- naughty too. Today it flew in and landed on our patio fence, - I just chanced to have the window open and the camera ready, so captured a couple "shots" before it flew down to the ground to hunt for little birds under a little tree nearby, and then it hurried/walked round to the front of the shrubbery, heading to do the same as it usually does, - enter the shrubs from below, rather than trying to fly into the branches. He didn't stay there long, the small birds must be "on" to him, and soon he was back on the overhead wires.

This is a lovely shot, love the pattern on the breast and then the stripes on the tail, very effective.

thanks very much, Don, glad you like it. Noticed the foot "up" while shooting, but wasn't sure if I'd captured that til seeing the images onscreen, so was pleased to have caught that, as the hawk didn't keep his foot up there very long.

Hi Karen, know what you mean. We were shocked to see this one running along the lawn below the bottom edge of the shrubs, before he climbed up "inside" the bushes! Someone said it was a juvenile, - well, he's sure a smart one :) if that's what he is. Must look again in the bird book to try to find out more about the juvenile & adult hawks and what the differences are in the markings.

If I were a little songbird in your yard, this would make me nervous. Great shot.

many thanks for the nice comments, Michelle, Steve and Beverly. Wasn't sure if it's a Coopers or Sharp Shinned hawk, so thanks for the suggestion, Michelle. I must get the bird book out.

Excellent shot, Alandra. The protruding foot does look rather strange!

Cool shot Alandra. I believe this is a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. I enjoy all 3 of the series.
