Piedmont

: Piedmont; This is the main set of buildings in the Piedmont Ghost Town. There are some smelters down the road a ways that say they were built in 1869 so these buildings were probably built some time before that. Even though they are 100-150 years old, they are in surprisingly good shape. This community thrived from the nearby railroad as well as the products that were produced from the smelters, which I've heard was mostly charcoal. This ghosttown is near the Utah and Wyoming border. I wonder if the Pied Piper stole the people away. We have a few places like this and I always wonder what the story is and why the people just wandered away. Thanks for picture of a ghost town.

Really an interesting photo. I grew up in a time and place where my dad and I visited many ghost towns, such as Piedmont. These are the real ghost towns, not the ones dreamed up by the Hollywood types. I always found them to be very interesting.

I found out more about Piedmont, WY. It was placed near the Union Pacific railroad station of Byrne in 1869 and later renamed to Piedmont. It consisted of a two story hotel, general store, school, post office, and newspaper. Soldiers from Fort Bridger often came here to visit the saloons.

Aspen tunnel was built in 1901, which redirected the railroad. This caused the town to die because the trains did not come here anymore. There are several structures and three intact charcoal kilns and one colapsed one. Part of the town is on a ranch that is fenced up really good, and it appears that visitors are not welcome on the ranch. Most of the buildings are accessible, however.
