Emily Lucy 1901/Maternal Grandmother

Emily Lucy, aged 19, my maternal grandmother, approx 1901. She looked after me a lot when my mother was very ill, during my childhood. I loved her very much. She lived to be 87.

thanks very much, Doug. Am sorry your grandfathers died before you had a chance to get to know them. My grandpas didn't live very long either, dying at around 45 yrs, but I do vaguely recall a few times spent with them. Speaking of resemblances earlier here, - while at my younger daughter's recently, noticed quite a resemblance between her and my grandma, and realized I was smiling to myself as I was noticing this :) I forgot to tell my daughter what I'd noticed, but just remembered after looking at this image again now.

What a lovely memory to have of her. Both of my grandfathers died before I was born and I've never seen a photo of either of them.

thanks very much for the nice comments, Cindy and Beverly. Know what you mean re the elderly, Cindy. I spent a lot of time with my maternal grandmother when I was young, but we moved to Canada when I was about 13, so missed a lot of time with her after that, sadly.

Lovely photo and nice keepsake. In viewing, what struck me was what a thin waistline she had.

I have just gone through alot of your photos to find this, your photography is stunning! I am going to make time to look at the whole of your gallery, and your grandmother looks like she would have been a lovely and wise person. I love the elderly, even tho I am getting on myself, I think we learn so much from them. The most interesting conversations I ever had was with my nana. Our talks never bored me and she would say "if I dont tell you these things, they will never be passed on" so now I pass these chats we had, onto my children.

I really like this photo myself. Such a shame someone felt an urge to delete comments.

hello again, Emily Lucy, -when I was a child, spent many summers at Bristol, staying with my aunt and uncle and cousins, at Bishops Road, Bishopston. Am not sure that I looked that much like my grandma when we were 19, but now that am getting older, have thought a few times that there is more of a resemblance to her : )

thankyou, Emily Lucy, for leaving the nice comment : ) where in England are you? I was born in Hampshire, came to Canada with parents many years ago.

just had to add, was thinking that maybe my young grandma was looking serious due to being upset about her hair, - it looks as if something went wrong with the "marcelling"/ waving at one side : ) Wouldn't it be great to know more about these old photos.

thanks, Gary, for the compliment and for the good idea re why the smiles were scarce in pics in those days. Better than a suggestion that I'd heard (that their teeth weren't in that great shape : ) - with lack of dental care that is available these days. Altho at age 19, as Emily Lucy was here, am sure she still had all her teeth.

Wonderful looking lady. I love these old photos. People did not smile because they had to hold a pose for a long time. Hard to hold a natural smile that long.

thanks Tam, Carol and Dud, yes, she was a very kind and good lady. Have noticed that most people didn't smile in photos in those days, -- I don't remember her being stern, I lived with her for long periods of time when my Mum was ill in hospital, -- she loved a laugh, perhaps "serious minded" might be a better description of her.

Dud from Louisiana on Jan 24, 2005 at 3:57 PM said:

Nice looking lady. She looks like she would be kind but stern at the same time.

I like the hands also, The ladies in those days always looked so dainty, thier waists so small its just amazing to me.I think all the work they did kept them trim.

thankyou Carol. Yes, also like her blouse, and especially the bows as decorations. wonder if she added those and what colour they were. Also like looking at her hands, zoomed in. and wonder about the skirt, if it was newly purchased for photo, as it's creased, and knowing my grandmother, not like her to wear a creased garment : )
