Sentry Box at Castillo de San Marcos, St Augustine, Florida

This is one of the three smaller sentry boxes at the Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine, Florida. The walkway is extremely narrow and a soldier armed with ammo and rifle to get to the box would have been an interesting sight.

Still, it was surprisingly well-sheltered. The coquina-shell block walls were highly resistant to cannon ball damage and the small openings would have been difficult to shoot into from the water.

Again, I've taken the liberty of editing the background slightly to keep the focus on the sentry box itself.

have only just found this one, Vicki. Agreeing with the other comments, very interesting and unique. And if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed that you hadn't toned down the view thru the opening :)

Thank you, Alan. This was a bit of a challenge as the sun was so bright and washed out the walls and walkway quite a bit. Some wall-top repairs are plastered - as this is, but it throws off the image in the bright sun. And yes, I just noticed one goof on my part - I forgot to tone down the view through the opening. Thank you Lorraine. I also forgot to mention that the opening is only about 5' 6" tall. I had to duck to get in there! Vicki
