On Their Way to Canada

A flock of Canadian Geese heading home at sunset. There seem to be several flocks in the area. Every evening at dusk, I see several hundred of these graceful birds heading into the setting sun. I have no idea where they go for the night, but it is a daily ritual.

They are difficult to photograph in flight, because they almost always seem to fly overhead when the light is too low for a propoer exposure. In addition, they give little warning that they are heading over, (maybe five seconds of their honking before they appear low overhead). They pass over in an instant and far away, making a well focused shot also a challenge.

I agree with the previous comments. Lovely composition. I have the same problem trying to capture pelicans and they don't make any noise. They suddenly appear and then they are gone.

A brilliant image, Alex. The distribution of birds in the frame could not be more perfect, so this is a great example of the "decisive moment". I also love the way the setting sun has given the birds a burnished, bronzed look. Given the difficulties you described, this is an even more impressive achievement.

Beautiful picture - I can hear the honking. *g* This time the leader is the one with his wings down. *g* I liked to see the different position of the geese. Great picture.
