Karen, thank y a tri-colou - it is indeedor heron - I never realized I didn't respond before. Thank you May, you do enjoy birds, don't you?

Moor hens keep their families together for quite awhile. It's fun to watch them.

How could it have taken me so long to find this beautiful picture. I can feel the waves rolling over my barefeet. I had never seen a moor hen before either. Such glorious pleasure you give us, Travlyn Woman.

Forgot to say... I think this is the Tricolored heron. We see them on the TX coast, too. A beauty.

Great shot getting two types of birds in the same shot. I love these nature preserves that allow us to view wildlife in a natural setting instead of zoos. Very nice.

me again : ) my own curiosity got the better of me, so did a google search for "dabchicks" and am relieved (lol) to find out that it wasn't my memory playing tricks : ) - it's such a strange name that had begun to wonder where I dredged it up from (the depths : )

apparently it's a nickname for "little grebe", and these birds are found in most parts of the UK. Latin name: Tachybaptus ruficolis if anyone's interested

Thank you Carol and Alandra. I never heard that name for them, Alandra - interesting!

such a pleasing shot, Vicki. used to see moorhens in England in childhood days, walking with maternal Grandma in Hampshire. just recalled another name, "dabchicks", not sure if that's a nickname for something else or what, had never thought of that name for years : )
