Thanks for your comment Tania (and again Alandra). Its been a while since I've had to rescue a bird from our cats but not sure if thats a good or bad thing. We don't know if Robbie is a hunter yet as he seems to be an indoor cat.

Alandra, we tried the bell thing. Some how they got rid of it! We live in the country so there are plenty of birds as we have quite a big property. I had rescued one of these a little bit earlier in the day also. That poor one had hardly any tail feather left but I held it in my hands and then slowly opened them and it flew away. The same thing with this one. These tend to "play dead" I've figured out but after about 5 minutes, they recover and take off. I've just got to keep the cats away until that happens. It was also one of these birds that I rescued in my photo of Flame with the feather in his mouth. What can I say - my cats love to hunt (and yes, we do feed them plenty).

had a similar experience about 4 days ago, not sure what happened to the young goldfinch, but DH alerted me to it, near the front doorstep, just sitting there on the ground. Held it, - wasn't sure it would survive as looked kinda "shakey" -- and gave it a few drops of water from the "stream" on patio, and then placed it on the bird feeder, - evening was coming, so thought that the best plan. It flew away after about 10 minutes. Think it had just got tired, on one of its solo flights, - it's flight feathers looked quite short still. Anyway, there are about 3 young NA goldfinches at the thistle feeder each day, so we hope one of them is the rescued one : )

Years ago, we had birds hitting the window glass of our solarium, and it was a race between me and our cats, as to who would get to the stunned birds in time! The cats grew to know the sound of the birds hitting the windows! (we got matchstick bamboo blinds later to prevent this) -

btw, one way to deter cats from catching birds, is to place a small bell on their collar, - when we had "hunter" cats, it worked well : )
