Baby Raccoon now leading blind Mama

baby raccoon appears to be leading the blind mother raccoon. Have been noticing this lately, as if this is what the baby is doing!!, and this image seems to show this. They are in our driveway here, - captured this from the open front window this evening.

There's a bit of movement in the baby's image, as he's hurrying to get up ahead of the mother, he seems to know she can't see. This has been quite something to watch. The wonders of Nature.

9 May 2008 update on blind mother raccoon. She's still around, as of yesterday at least, when we last saw her. We've been out all afternoon & evening today, so missed her if she visited us. I left some dry cat kibbles under the shrubbery where she hides and comes thru into our patio area, so she'd have some food while we were gone, as she can't compete with the raccoons who have their vision. She hurt one of her front legs recently and has been hobbling around, which makes foraging even more difficult for her. But when she was here yesterday, she seemed to be using her hurt paw/leg more, so hopefully it'll gradually improve.

well, she showed up again, glad to report :) Last night when we arrived home, here was the blind raccoon at the end of our driveway, as if she was waiting for us to get home! She soon disappeared into our upper border shrubbery, so we ran indoors and grabbed some food for her, as she hadn't been here for a week or so, and she re-appeared right away to get the food. We wonder where she gets to when she's gone for a week at a time. Maybe she's changed her routine now, and will start visiting us at nights instead of in daylight.

no sign of the blind mama raccoon for about a week. Trusting she's okay and will show up again.(this is April 6 2008 now).

new update :) March 21st, 08. The blind mother raccoon showed up here again a few days ago, and has been visiting each morning since. She also returned to our front patio area again this afternoon, so I went out to see her, and she walked right up to me when I was sitting in the lawn chair on patio. I haven't been out there to see her since her return, as DH has been giving her handouts before I get up, so it was as if she made a special point of walking up close to me, today, as she came back under the fence & into the patio area and walked right up to where I was sitting.

update. after having the blind mama raccoon visiting us around the same time each morning for quite awhile, - lately she hasn't shown up for a week or more and I haven't seen her around anywhere else either. Sometimes if we missed seeing her on our front patio, I'd see her later at nights on our crescent, wandering about, looking for food.

Not sure what's happened. Am wondering if perhaps she's had babies and isn't leaving her den yet. Time will tell, I guess. Plan to ask my next door neighbour if she's seen her.

saw the blind mother raccoon finally again late this afternoon. She seemed more timid than usual. No idea where she's been for about a week since I last saw her. But last nite, did see raccoon footprints in the bit of snow on front patio, near the water where she drinks, so wondered if that might have been her, so quite likely it was.

Hi Anne, thanks very much for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed the story and photo. There are also other images of them. Haven't seen the blind Mother raccoon for about 5 days now, so am thinking perhaps something happened to her.

what a truly amazing sight that must've been, Janet, as you say! Wish I could have seen it. I hope you will share some photos here of the baby raccoon and your miniature horse. The horse must realize the raccoon is a baby so let him sit on its back. Am glad you are going to care for him. Maybe the mother raccon cast him off when she realized he's blind?

its nice to learn that a raccoon can get along wthout its eyesight because this morning i looked out my window and on top of my minurature horses back was a baby racoon. It had been a very cold night and he crawled up to stay warm. I went running outside to see this amazing sight up close to my amazement he didnt run off he is blind. im going to care for him.

it's now 26 September. We never saw that baby raccoon again, but the blind mother raccoon was in our backgarden again 2 days ago, and also a couple days prior to that.

Hi Ikka, I understand your concern. Sad part is, the baby has not been seen for 2 weeks now, so something has happened to it. And now, the mother raccoon hasn't been seen for a few days either. We've been out a lot so may have missed her, - time will tell.

Ikka Capellan from Germany/Europe on Jul 28, 2007 at 10:18 AM said:

Alandra, I'm so busy, that I did not seen this image before. I feel sorry for this raccoon, but I think you should call the animal wildlife service to bring them into a station of wildlife. It would help more, because this young baby cannot observing the mother the long life. Your photo is very impressioned. Thanks for sharing this story.

yes, I know what you mean, Vicky. Have also been hoping perhaps he'll show up, altho' really am sure he won't, after so long being missing. When looking back at some of my entries here, notice that I mentioned the strong winds blowing the treetops on July 9th, - so have wondered since reading that, whether the poor little fella might have lost his hold on the tree branch and fallen down. Didn't see him again after that strong wind.

That's about what I figured, my friend. . . it was wishful thinking. I'm glad Mama's holding her own for now

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jul 19, 2007 at 7:06 PM said:

Hi Vicki, thanks, knew you'd be sorry to hear. well, the mother seems able to take care of herself really, as she's getting up there in age and has survived for sometime this way, I believe.

As hopeful a thought that is, re the baby being out on his own now, am afraid that's not "it", as he was too young, - this years offspring, born March or April I think. I read somewhere that the mothers keep the young for about a year, - believe it's a bit longer for one of the sexes, female perhaps, I've forgotten. Am pretty sure they boot the offspring out, so to speak, when they are about to have the new young the following year.

TravlynWomyn from Bushkill, PA - for a few more weeks on Jul 19, 2007 at 3:15 PM said:

I'm so sorry to hear that, Alandra. Is there any place that might be able to take the mother for her own protection? The other possibility on the young one could be that it was simply ready to move out on its own. We never know. Thank you for keeping this loop going. You're terrific. Vicki

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jul 19, 2007 at 2:03 AM said:

Hi Dear Vicki, am glad you shared that special story with us, - have never heard of a raccoon befriending a dog like this. That is very sweet. Great to hear about it.

Sorry to say, I fear the worst for the baby raccoon, as the mama has been appearing here (and around the area) for several days now, alone. Have held off from updating, as was hoping the baby might re-appear, but am afraid too long has passed. Infact, up til the early hours of this morning, thought the mother raccoon might also be "gone", -- but she finally showed up here when she heard me down the end of the back garden around 3 AM this morning. All was quiet there, and I was just about to return to the house, when here appeared the poor blind mother raccoon. I gave her some food. She was sniffing the base of a tree trunk that the raccoons climb up, and I was wondering if she was trying to locate a scent of her baby. Of course, am quite sad to think of something happening to that special little baby, infact, had a hard time falling asleep last night after seeing her alone down there, and thinking how prettily he had played in the water and how he had been running around so fast the last time I saw him. Guess the poor mother raccoon couldn't protect the baby well enough, and something went wrong. Anyway, we had the opportunity to see the wonder of this little "fella" interacting with his disabled mother, and I feel privileged to have been able to capture the images and share them with anyone interested.

Alandra, what a special image and it's wonderful that you've kept the narrative current on this pair. I've seen this happen before. A friend from Warren PA had an elderly, blind Dachshund. It loved to play outside, but whenever it got too close to the end of the garden a raccoon would come out and quietly turn it back towards the house. My friends loved watching them together.

This image brings that memory back. Thank you - like everyone else I'll be popping back in for more updates. Vicki

update:) haven't been seeing this pair during daytime lately, which is good, but was a bit concerned. Went out late 2 nites ago, down to the end of the backyard, and sure enough, there they were, - the baby's leg is fine now, happy to report :) so am glad the mama is now bringing baby out at night. Missed seeing them last night, went down there at around 2:15AM but none were there. Even they go to bed earlier than me lol

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Jul 10, 2007 at 4:29 AM said:

thankyou Wilma for the kind thoughts. I did see the pair of them yesterday (8th) - the little one's leg still seemed a bit sore, but he could climb and run if he had to :) However, didn't see them today and I was here all day, so trust all's okay. Very high wind here today, the tall treetops were just blowing all around, so thought of the baby raccoons trying to cling on.

Wilma from Pennsylvania, USA on Jul 10, 2007 at 12:22 AM said:

saw the pair of them again today, after a couple days not seeing them, as we were out a lot. The baby was limping on one of his/her hind legs today, so that made me sad/worried of course. But I watched him for awhile, and he was able to bear weight on it, altho could see it hurt him. Am hoping it will get better soon, as he's at risk if he can't move quickly. Plus he has to lead his mother. Guess he must've fallen from a tree or something.

This is really a neat capture Alandra. It does almost put a tear in your eye, nature can seem so unfair at times. Then, I think that racoons have such a keen sense of smell and those big whiskers for feeling their way around at night when they are most active and maybe it isn't that bad for the old girl. I hope not anyway. It sure would be nice for her to see just how cute her kid is though. Great capture and story alandra. Don

thanks Anne for the nice comments. It is a bittersweet type of situation, for sure. The other early evening, in the backgarden, saw the pair of them on the side/back fence. Had camera, so tried to get some images (didn't turn out as was too dark) But the baby saw me and stood up on its little hind legs (to get a better view I guess) and actually "tapped" his mother with one little front paw,- he did it about 3 times, as if to let her know someone was there. It was cute to watch. I did get some images of them on the fence, but they are pretty blurry.
