Beech Avenue, with a charming series of three-story houses of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, many adorned with spacious verandahs. Two famous names attach themselves to houses on this short block: Gertrude Stein (who "always remained firmly born in Allegheny, Pa") was born in 1874 in the richly adorned two-story Italianate brick house at 850; Mary Roberts Rinehart lived for years in the substantial brick house at 954 Beech, at the northeast corner of Allegheny Avenue. It was here in 1907 that Rinehart wrote The Circular Staircase, one of America's pioneer mystery stories. Next door, at 948-950 Beech, stands a delightful double house that is a totally eclectic mix of Italianate, Second Empire, and High Victorian Gothic detail.
