Steve, the actual colors in the original photo were shades of black/gray. The wall behind the dog was glass brick reflecting these colors. I just used curves to bring out the existing colors a bit more. Thanks for the critique...I appreciate it. :)

I agree entirely with Silverdebster's analysis. When you say you used curves to adjust the colour, was that to convert to B&W, or was it to adjust the B&W tones after you'd used something else?

Just dropped by and the thumbnail caught my attention. The full version is lovely and you've caught the focus point full-on in the pup's eye. Lots of detail in the light and markings that could have been distracting if you hadn't managed such a narrow dof, very successfully. Quite a moving shot.
