The largest single group of Indian prisoners sentenced to confinement on Alcatraz occurred in January 1895 when the U.S. government arrested, tried and shipped nineteen Moqui Hopi to Alcatraz Island. Indian people continued to be confined as prisoners in the disciplinary barracks on the island through the remainder of the 1800s and the early 1900s.i hope this helps alex .d

Hey, Grumpy Mike... From what I have read, the island was uninhabited when the Spanish first arrived there. Many years after the island closed as a prison, a group of Native Americans occupied the island in protest and claimed it as indian property (1969). They inhabited the island for almost two years. Most left the island but a few were forcibly removed in 1971.

After that the island has been part of the National Park Service. There is little evidence of the indian occupation, but I will post another photo, with a remnant.

Very cool shot of 'The Rock' Alex. That is a beautiful blue sky above an interesting place. What you said is fitting Steve. If you ended up on the rock, I think you were pretty much screwed (if I can say that :-) Don

A very imposing shot. I like the intense blue sky, and the thrusting (almost phallic, if I'm allowed to say that here) tower.
