Staged Flower

Return to current contests.
The idea behind this contest is to stage a shot of a flower complete with a backdrop, artificial lighting, and a reflector (if needed). For those without professional equipment, a piece of material or cardstock could be used for a backdrop, a couple of lamps could be used to create the desired light, and any shiny surface could be used as a reflector. You could also use a mirror or other things to help stage your flower. You can use software to enhance color and do minor editing, but you shouldn't use it to extract the flower from a 'natural' background. There are a lot of great examples of this type of shot on TLF, so you might want to browse the flowers category for inspiration.

Broken Dream

Here is my staged flower entry. I used a 1200 year old Native American pot and wild flowers from the field by my house. The pot is on a beaver pelt. I used a combination of candle light and I LED flash light painted during the expousure. I used a black backdrop in a dark room. Thanks for looking. Don

Cactus Flower

I'd been looking unsuccessfully for a decent flower to shoot for the contest in the middle of a drought, when I noticed our cactus doing its semi-annual thing. Knowing the flower would be limp in a few hours, I quickly draped it with a black cloth, shot in macro mode with electronic flash, using a couple pieces of foam packaging material as a diffuser and a reflector. Cropped and tweaked a little in Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Lucky Sunflower

Under our bird feeder there is always a few lucky seeds that don't get eaten by the birds, and this is one of them. I hung a red sheet behind it for the background then waited for the evening sun to shine on it.

Poppy Power ..

Flower Power was the theme for a photo competition run by the local Flower Show so I entered this image of a poppy head that I found in a nearby park. They must have liked it as it got first prize.

Sunflowers

A Colbalt Blue vase of Sunflowers, given to me by my husband. I've been looking for Sunflowers to photo and haven't come across any. Usually I have some come up from putting out Sunflower seed for the birds but this year none have appeared. I used cream colored muslin laid over a piece of foamcore. For light I used a clamp on light, ceiling light and the camera flash, nothing elaborate.

Staged, copy of an early Dutch artist's painting

Pink Geraniums and other items arranged to imitate a work of art by an early Dutch artist, Jan David de Heem. Used a beige tablecloth as a backdrop, a lamp set on the table to illuminate the area where the arrangement was, plus the built in flash on the camera. Hand held. The butterflies were added by hanging a mobile behind the arrangement. Had fun arranging this.
