Flower Photography

Return to current contests.
Spring is here so flowers seem to be a natural contest selection. It seems that almost all flowers are shot top down into the center of the flower. With this contest, try and photograph flowers in a more unique fashion, such as black and white, from the side, with an interesting background, with a black background, as part of a larger picture, or any number of other unique ways to take a photograph, paint, or draw flowers.

Spatterdock - Yellow Pond Lily

This photo was taken in the Uinta Mountains a mile or two from Mirror Lake in one of the hundreds of little ponds in the area. The reflection turned out really well in this one, I think. This is an image of a Yellow Spatterdock, which is also commonly called a yellow pond lily or cow lily. Their flowers can bloom from May to October, but since the Uintas are covered in snow until late June to July, they'll end up flowering later in the year. I've done a little research on yellow pond lilies, and found out a few interesting facts. Their roots have been used in stews or made into flour, and the seeds have been popped like popcorn. Native Americans used the leaves to stop bleeding, and they're now used in water gardens and aquariums. They are very important for the ecosystem since they provide shade for fish and cover from predators. They are a home for tons of tiny creatures, like the bonnet worm, who are then eaten by fish. Also, different parts of the plants are eaten by larger animals like beavers, muskrats, and deer.

Ice Lily

White Water Lily,on a black background, digitally altered in Paint Shop Pro, to make an abstract composition. The original image is also in my gallery, called 'Lily White'. I thought the transformation was very successful.

Spring Blossoms

While waiting for a sunset that didn't materialize like I wanted, I was distracted by the spring blossoms. Nikon D80, 55-200/3.5G VR, 1/15s, f/10, ISO 220, all natural light, handheld.

Pretty Pink

Pink Prairie Mallow in our garden in July.

Hoya Plant (Wax flower)

After the close up, I took one of the rest of the plant. Considering that it's not the most pampered plant & has been hanging in my kitchen in the same pot for years, I'm always amazed that it flowers so prolifically! As it's a hanging plant, this is clicked from underneath looking up (I couldn't even see what I was photographing!), you'll see my ceiling tiles too if you look closely lol.

Dogwood

A rainy spring day in an Indiana state park didn't put a damp on the beauty of this dogwood. I decided to try a walk in the rain to get some pictures on my new Nikon D40. I'm new to the photography hobby so am just learning. Hope you like this one!

Purple Spot

This is the center of a just-opening Queen Anne's Lace flowerhead, showing the characteristic "Purple Spot" floret in the center, surrounded by hundreds of as-yet-unopened white florets. The larger pink-colored florets around the outer edge are usually only apparent as the flowerhead is opening.

Syringa

The beloved Lilac - one of the mainstays of the British shrub border. This type will brighten up anyones garden in May and early June they are nearly always varieties of S.vulgaris, the Commom Lilac. The flowering season is short, about three weeks, but the fragrance and size of the blooms compensate for it. This one is called 'Madame Lemoline' Enjoy:)
