Midnight Tulip

Tulipa nitor, also known as a brilliant tulip in the northeast and a midnight tulip in the south, stores the energy of the sun during the day in phosphorous cells, which causes it to softly glow during the dark of night. Common varieties have flowers that range from blue to purple, with dark green stems and leaves.

These perennial bulbous plants can grow from 10-70 cm tall. They can't grow naturally in tropical environments because they need a cold winter season to survive.

In reality, this is a fictional flower created entirely in Photoshop. It's fun to dream though. Wouldn't it be a spectacular sight to see one of these for real?

Thanks Mark. This was mainly done by creating shapes in Photoshop with the pen tool. The pen tool allows you to bend lines into a 'path'. I used several path layers which formed the shape of the pedal and leaves.

Once I had the path the way I wanted it, I stroked it (which basically paints a line around the shape). I played with gradients and colors until I found something that I liked and then applied the motion blur effect to create that 'glow'.

The stem was created by another pen 'path', and I painted in the green base of the flower by zooming in really far and painting it 1 pixel at a time. Last, I cropped the overall image to place the flower the center to balance everything out.

This is an incredible fine art image that shows an eye for composition and creativity. Hmm, now I'm wondering how you did that in Photoshop.

I'm often asked how this image was made. The quick answer is that I used the pen tool in Photoshop to create a series of paths. I stroked each path to create a petal, and then copied that petal onto several layers. Each layer was rotated, flipped, etc to get it in the right spot. I used various opacities to get the "see through" effect, along with gradients, and the motion blur filter.

Hi Brian;

I was led to this page from Squidoo. I too am a graphic artist. I find this image quite striking. It looks especially nice as a screen image with the back lighting.
