Tomatoes on the Vine

another of our favourites, "on the vine" tomatoes. Make loads of Greek salads all summer, plus countless tomato "sammiches" : )

These are grown locally in huge hothouses, which seems to becoming the latest venture in our area,--

we see these monstrous hothouses springing up all over the place. They grow these tomatoes, English cucumbers and red peppers, green peppers, orange peppers and yellow peppers, to name some items. Another Greek Salad coming up lol

seeing this image, -just had to comment on the current "tomato scare" in the US. It seems to be affecting us here in Canada too, as some restaurants here are also not serving tomatoes with their meals. I did see on CNN today that the tomatoes on the vine (as shown in this image) are not included in the "do not eat" category (glad to say, as we love them)

Thankyou, --I just left a comment at one of yours Alex, - coincidence, we must both be up late! - here on the westcoast : ) Yes, I love tomatoes, always have, esp these "on the vine" type. Pricier at this time of year tho, despite a lot being grown locally.

Early Girl sounds familiar too, think we grew those. We had a greenhouse out back when we moved here, so one year I started loads of tom. plants from seed. Heard about "damping off" so planted extra, thinking we'd lose some. LOL. big surprise, they ALL grew/thrived. We were over-run with tomato plants, we were giving them away. Can't recall the names of them all now tho, but had quite a variety, but the sweetest of all were the Sweet 100's. They are a little larger than the real cherry tomatoes too. just a good size

Gorgeous looking tomatoes, the ones we planted are called Early Girl and than we have the cherry tomatoes too.

My nephew has eight huge greenhouses, they are called Frugal Farmers and sell produce right at the farm also do Farmers Markets around the area, it is unbelievable the prices they get, like 5.00 for a quart of Strawberries and 4.50 for a bunch of beet greens.People will buy anything that they think is organically grown.

the best tomatoes we grew were the "Sweet 100's", a small variety, but they live up to their name, sooo many on each plant & so good tasting. We haven't grown any for sometime.

got my love for tomatoes from my Dad's cousin in England, who always grew tomatoes in his greenhouse. When I went over there the last time, he remembered how I'd always loved them, and kept the first tomato that year, for me to pick. he was a great gardener

Nice looking tomatoes!! We already have had ours ripen. We have a special breed down here called Creole tomatoes. They are not as pretty but they are big and delicious.
