Excalibur

The Lady of the Lake holds Excalibur above the foamy water.

I modeled the fantasy sword in Wings 3D in a sort of claymore fashion. The blue and red blade was my seven year old son's idea. He picked the colors in Bryce's material editor and I liked it so much that I kept it. I was going to have a boring polished steel look to it. The texture of the handle is actually sheet metal with embossed tread.

The arm came from a female model from Poser. I used it to make her hand look like she was holding something then imported her into Bryce.

The waves were created by using a lattice. In Bryce's terrain editor, I eroded and smoothed it, then painted on circles of different sizes and shades. The way this works is the lighter the grey, the more it raises the terrain. I gave this and a water plane the foamy seawater preset and I grabbed a complimentary sky preset.

Then I grouped the arm and fantasy sword (what a pain to get the sword in the right place and angle to look like she was actually holding it) and rotated it until I liked the sky in the background. I wanted whiteness directly behind the sword so that it would stand out more.

This a very creative image indeed. I think it would make a great DVD or poster image for remake of the Knights of the Round Table. It's that good.

Something Lens Flare might want to consider is having short tutorials online for specific tasks in the photographic arts. I'd love to see a tutorial on how this image (or another) was created using Bryce and Poser software with Photoshop. Maybe if enough people are interested and post on the forum it could happen?

The sword - the whole setting really - is one of my favorite pictures. I can feel the suspense. An excellent picture.

I thought I had commented on this picture but I guess only thought hard. *g* I was reading about that famous sword when I was 7 years old. My Mom was a school teacher and I was reading at 4. My pleasure. And these legends of Arthur and the Lady of the Lake kept their excitement right on through the years!!! Great work!

I've always loved the fantasy epic regarding Excalibur, King Arthur, and the Knights of the Round Table. This is a wonderful visualization of the legendary sword.

Thanks guys. This was fun to make and is currently the background wallpaper on my computer desktop. (Well, the full sized version, that is.)

Some of the detail of the hilt and the glass marble looking pummel was lost in the resize, but I think the shadows and highlights turned out well.

I tried to make the water swell look like there was some sort of power eminating from where the Lady is hinted to be, in addition to the fact that the water's surface would have been broken by the sword and arm thus creating a ripple effect.

This is fascinating, Brian. Before reading your description of the work I was admiring the way you've got a slight shadow below the arm so it connects the arm with her suggested body under the waves. You haven't left anything to chance here :) Nice colouring, too.

this is wonderful, very impressive. Love anything to do with King Arthur! fabulous sword effect, love the light shining thru it, esp down by the hilt. And the arm is great, also the water swirling effect and appearance of foam/froth.

A work of art! Sounds like a lot of work went into producing it.
