Swallowtail Butterfly

This is one huge swallowtail. I saw him from inside my house fly bya nd land in our bush. He is hurt as you will see only one piece of his tail is there.

They have a wing span of 3.5-6.5 inches (9-16.5 cm).

They are called Swallowtail butterflies because of the "tail" that mimics those of the swallow bird.

Ok just some neat facts. and this so far has been my best photo of the 2006 summer season

Great Shot, Tam! It does look huge too. Good for you, capturing that. We don't see that many butterflies around here for some strange reason. Maybe we encourage too many birds and maybe that keeps the butterflies away?
