Sundog

SundogWe ran across this "sundog", or parhelion this afternoon, and fortunately had the camera along. The sun is to the left; the sundog had a much fainter mate on the other side of the sun. These are always formed 22 degrees from the sun's position, and are caused by refraction through ice crystals in thin cirrus clouds. I did some adjustments (levels and saturation) to enhance the image, but it's basically as we saw it.
