Strip Mine

This strip mine is just north of Jerome, Arizona. Mining ended quite some time ago, and Jerome is now an art colony and tourist mecca. The town is a mile high and is literally built on the side of a very steep mountain.

This photo was in color and I altered it to B&W.

This was a copper mine. In 1912, it was the largest producing copper mine in Arizona Territory. Most of the mining was underground. There were many miles of tunnels beneath the town of Jerome.
