Bird in the Snow

just a plain old starling sitting on a snowy branch. I liked the iridescence on its feathers tho'.

Hi Jim, many thanks, good to see you here again, and glad to be back also, after my hard drive "meltdown" :) This snow was a bit of a shock in our region, we are usually spoiled around here, but it's gone now so all are happy.

Now here is a bird I recognise and a nice shot to. We have starlings here in Aus. Introduced over a hundred years ago. Don't have much of the ice and snow tho'.

glad you also like this one, Alex D, - I really like all the rows of spots too :) - all in nice patterns. Maybe he's one of a kind :) His eye is open and a bit more noticeable in the original version.

Wow. You have been holding out on us. That is the best looking starling I have ever seen also. I have never seen such colors and feather design. This fella really stands out against the snow. Nicely done.

I love irredescence of the feathers also. I have a photo of one with a punk rock looking hairdo. Beautiful shot. Love it.

thanks Carol, glad you like it. Am surprised you don't see starlings there, thought they were everywhere, - here they usually gather in the farmlands, but during snowy/cold weeather they find bird feeders in peoples' gardens and gobble everything up in no time :) Then they take off again when the weather improves.

thanks for all the nice comments, glad you liked it also, - Les, Alex, Alan and Don. I was surprised about your birdbath freezing over Alan. I hesitated putting a starling pic up on the gallery, knowing how people think they are pests, but liked the markings etc on this one.

Super photo Alandra! I think the Starlings are very pretty with all of there many colors. I'm also amazed at how birds can take the cold. At night my birdbath will freeze, I go out in the mornings and break up the ice and throw out the big chunks. Then the birds will show up and take baths in the water with the little chunks of ice in it. Brrrr I get shivers just watching them.

thankyou Steve and Lorraine for the nice comments. Was saying the same to DH just now, about the unfair press, - and commenting on the markings on the feathers of this starling also, very pretty really. This fella had been bathing, - it was amazing how so many birds bathed here during the snowy weather, it doesn't seem to bother them. And the starlings bathe a lot, - so they aren't as "dirty" as people think they are. Course, they are greedy :)

love the colours in the feathers in this one.

What a great shot! Starlings get such an unfair press - I think they're very beautiful in a subtle way. This one looks very cold, with his puffed up feathers.
