Thanks so much, Vicki. Your memories of this place are a lot more interesting than my picture of it!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Steve! I made 4L, 13s 6d a week working there as a Harrods Junior in 1962.

It's too bad you can't see the employee-only areas - they're an experience of their own. Employees are only allowed to be seen in their departments, or during employee shopping time. If we had to escort a customer somewhere, we disappeared behind the walls as soon as they reached their destination.

I have to keep this brief - but employees entered across the street. At that time, our time clocks resembled huge roulette wheels. 500 employees were on each clock. You lined up a series of stacked wheels to your emplyee number, then whacked the thing - hard - in the middle. One day I couldn't work due to laryngitis. I called the nurse and my department - but failed to call personnel. A week later there was a sign on my clock wanting to know if anyone had been absent in that time. Apparently, if personnel wasn't informed, it could really muck up the time cards - oops! (guilty!)

We even had full and temporary restrooms - by alphabet - i.e., A - J, K -t, etc!

Employee meals were held in several cafeteria or dining rooms. Juniors, like me - were self-service cafeteria, while buyers enjoyed full-service, white table-cloth dining.

We even had a wonderful country club for both Harrods and Selfridges employees.

That's enough to bore you with for now!

Thanks again - huge hugs - Vicki

Thanks for all your great comments, Beverly, Alex, Mike and Golda!

Mike, this is the facade that faces Hyde Park, although you can't actually see the park from there. Beverly, I like your description and I can see what you mean. And Golda, your pocket wouldn't be full of money for long! Yes, Alex, it's huge, full of rich people, none of them English!!

Nice shot - it almost looks like the building is one big vehicle moving down the road aqnd that is ready to plow into the next building. At least that was my first impression from the thumbnail. Interesting structure.
