Thames Barrier

A view of the Thames Barrier, designed to protect London from flooding due to high tides in the North Sea. The flood gates are being closed increasingly often as sea levels rise due to global warming.

Hi Vicky sorry I haven't responded sooner to this question! The barrier is about 6 or 7 miles from the City as the crow flies. Thanks for your kind comments on the photo, as well!

I missed these gems before now, Steve. How far east of The City is this unique barrier? This is a great image with a wonderful purpose. Vicki

Thanks Alandra. I guess your friend would come up through south and west London if arriving from Southampton, and the barrier is to the east side of the city, so perhaps it's not something that would be naturally on their route. Anyway glad you found it both interesting and good to look at.

another one that I've been meaning to comment on. Very interesting Steve, and am another who had not heard of this barrier before. Which surprises me, as have a pal who often sends me photos after he's made a trip up to London from Southampton, but he's never included this. Can see where it would look really impressive for photos in sunrise and sunset times of day.

Thanks Lorraine and Alex. The barrier is remarkably handsome for a defensive engineering project, especially in the morning sunlight.

very nice shot, I have to admit i have not heard of them before, it's interesting, it's also still just a little chilly here to think to much about global warming. impressive shot.

Nice shot. Those barriers are a great photographic subject. It is nice the way the light hits them and their unusual shape.

Thanks to all of you, Mary, Don and Mike for your good comments. I know what you mean Don, when it's cold I start thinking that a bit of global warming might come in handy!! And you're right as well Mike - it's good that we can respond to a threat with something that is also beautiful in its own right.

Thanks Beverly. Glad you liked the composition, as this is usually the thing I try hardest to get right.
