I came across this snake while hiking along a local river today.He became a bit irrate when I poked him with my walking stick,but I got a good shot by doing it.

I think this might be a checkered gartersnake. The like to eat tadpoles and small fish, so it is not surprising that you found it near water. They are not venemous but can bite with their small sharp teeth.

Thanks for the comment Alandra,I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't think they are deadly poisonous,but I'm sure they could give you a nasty bite.He did strike at my walking stick .
