Royal Albert Hall 1

View of this famous concert hall from the south. It was built in memory of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.

The circular design is unusual, although it creates a very difficult internal acoustic which is controlled by a lot of "flying saucers" suspended from the ceiling!

Thanks Bernadette and Vicki. Yes, only eagle-eyed Mike saw that crane - even I had to look after he pointed it out!

Really glad you've enjoyed the "retrospective" Vicki, and a great snippet of your '60s experience!

Hi Steve - I'm finally getting back online for a bit, so I came to check your London images as you suggested.

This is a fun trip back in time for me - I went to a couple of rock concerts here. (You want to know how 'dated' I am - Billy Fury's 'Halfway to Paradise' is still one of my favs - and I really thought Adam Faith was wayyyy too cool!!!) When I returned to the US in '63 the Beatles were just beginning to make a name for themselves on this side of the fish pond . . . people used to wonder how I knew the words to some of their songs - they'd been out over there for months!

I always loved the interior and exterior of The Royal Albert Hall. Thanks for the memories - Vicki

Thank you fella and Alandra! Dream on fella - or maybe come and see them for yourself some time!

Great anecdote, Alandra. I'll bet this incident is burned on that hapless young woman's memory even more than yours!

Hi Fella and Steve, am glad I checked in here, or would've missed these cool images. Have been here, as a youngster, - & on one occasion, a young woman in our group had to sing a solo, and something went wrong with her accompanist on the piano, and the young woman hit the wrong note, and was sooo embarrassed at this happening infront of this large crowd of people, that she fainted! Strange how these events remain in one's mind.

Never, I was there, but I heard so much about it, this photo will let postcards look pale all.

Thank you Mike - a vintage offering! As for the crane, I'm not really bothered by it. It was there, and this is a record of that fact rather than a picture-postcard perfect view of the hall.

nice photo steve have got lot of useless info for our good friends from over the pond ..but would you be able to delete the crane on the right hand side?

info time

The hall, a Grade I listed building [1], is oval in shape, measuring 83 m (272 feet) by 72 m (238 feet) around the outside, and has a capacity of 8,000 people and has accommodated as many as 9,000 (although modern safety restrictions mean that the maximum permitted capacity is now 5,544 including standing in the Gallery). The great glass and wrought-iron dome roofing the hall is 41 m (135 feet) high.Above the frieze is an inscription in one-foot high terracotta letters. This combines historical fact and Biblical quotations: "This hall was erected for the advancement of the arts and sciences and works of industry of all nations in fulfilment of the intention of Albert Prince Consort. The site was purchased with the proceeds of the Great Exhibition of the year MDCCCLI. The first stone of the Hall was laid by Her Majesty Queen Victoria on the twentieth day of May MDCCCLXVII and it was opened by Her Majesty the Twenty Ninth of March in the year MDCCCLXXI. Thine O Lord is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty. For all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine. The wise and their works are in the hand of God. Glory be to God on high and on earth peace."

Many thanks Lorraine, Carol and Mary. Must be nice Mary to be able to connect the inside with the outside! And Lorraine, it's good to see something for the first time that you've known about for ages!
