Wild Jimson Weed

My description has been updated thanks to Cary's info, Thanks Cary... These Datura or Jimson Weed bush type plant grows wild in the desert, they seem to really enjoy the edge of roads, go figure LOL. These large blooms open late at night or very early morning and close by noon. They are also very poisonous and do not have any real smell to them at all. Some people call them moon-flowers. I think they are pretty smart plants with going to sleep during the heat of the day. I think the blooms last around a week opening and closing, then new blooms take over.

Well Alandra I don't know what to say, I must have got sidetracked by a couple years, sorry... Did your seeds ever take hold and grow? You have two years to answer LOL.. They just have the smell of a plant with no prettiness at all. And Cary you got it, they are called the Jimson Weed out here. They are like you said very poisonous and they grow everywhere. My neighbor told me a while back that if you make some weak like tea from them it's like taking a trip on LSD or acid. Thanks Ann for your nice thoughts about my photo and for helping me get caught up. Brian's email notifications and list of new comments sure helps with keeping up.

Alan I got such a kick out of reading the comments left for this

photograph. It is a striking bloom and one to notice easily. Nicely

captured and enjoyable to view. Did you ever find out if it had

a scent...now remember never chew on this plant. :-)

Hello Bubbalinn, there are a whole bunch of flowers loosley named "moonflower" because of their tendancy to bloom in the evening. This one is a Datura or Jimson Weed, spreads like wildfire and all parts of the plant are highly poisonous, so don't start chewing!

well, I guess you did forget, Alan, LOL. Anyway, am glad to see this image again, - I did buy some moonflower seeds, better get them planted to see what happens. No idea if they'll grow here, but worth a try.

Thanks Sparkle.. With doing a image search I found there are many types of these flowers. White flowers are tough to photograph. I'm not sure what setting need to be used to get the true white.

I need to remember tomorrow and go smell one for Alandra LOL..

I seen an exact flower in a flower container in front of the hospital. It opens at night and is closed during the day. And when I tried to shoot it it had a blue tinge like yours but was really white. Great shot though.

meant to ask, do they have a scent?

thanks for the info Alan, re the size of the flower. That's an impressive size. I used to read a lot of seed catalogues - Park Seeds being one, - and that's where I saw a lot of these flowers and often wanted to grow them. but I never have seen a moonflower growing, so your photo was a nice surprise (and a good guess : )

Hi Alandra,

Thanks for the nice comment and info. I did a Google image search and this looks like the moonflower you mentioned. The blooms diameter is around the size of your hand and fingers and there length would be from your finger tip to past your wrist. They are always hard to photograph with there white color, but being so large helps a lot.

very beautiful, Alan! the way you have captured the light on the flower is lovely. am wondering if this is what a "moonflower" is like, as have never seen one, - but you mention it blooming in the morning. How large is the bloom?

thanks.
