Owl faking sleep, guarding young

saw this parent Great Horned Owl yesterday, in the wild, basking in the sunshine. Probably the mother owl, as she was quite big. This one's colouring is very dark this year. The new baby owls were in the nest in a hollow tree closeby. A bit too high to get pics of the babies, and too dark inside the hollow tree. Looked like 2 babies, quite small still.

She was preening herself a lot while we watched, then pretended to sleep, but when several people stood below the "nest tree" she sure became alert, so we moved away.

many thanks, Karen. Was just thrilled yesterday when I suddenly caught sight of this one, just "above" where we wandered, hoping to see some. I hadn't been to that area to walk our dogs for several weeks, so was just guessing that maybe some baby owls might be "around" by now. and sure enough they are : ) we'll be going there more often again now! like every day.
