Drum Major Ancestor - 13th Foot

this is my ancestor, Joseph James Linch, my great x 4 grandfather on my mother's father's line. He was born in England in 1792 and died in India on 7 September 1827. Written below the painting is "2nd Battallion 35th Regiment". Joseph Linch enlisted in the 13th Foot at around age 15, became a Drum Major, and fought with Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo, then went to India where he died in 1827 or 1828.

This painting is now in the Royal Sussex (ex 35th) Regimental Museum in Chichester, England. (donated by a relative).

thanks Gary. I wrote to someone (online) who knows about military uniforms, and he was so thrilled to see this photograph, said it's what people interested in this, "dreams of" finding. in as many words. However, it didn't lead to me finding anything else out about my ancestor, unfortunately.

That's so cool, Alandra. There are so many interesting details in this painting. I love to see historical photos and paintings like this.

that's neat, Dud. Am still wondrin' why or how this painting came to be placed on a burner of some stove (if that's what the "ring" mark is at one corner).

Lucky the whole painting didn't go up in smoke : )

That's cool. My Great Grandfather, not Anthony, was a drummer boy in the Civil War in New Orleans. So we have something else in common.
