Number 3 in the series shows the butterfly pushing it's way out of the chrysalis shell. For years as a child I thought that the fancy gold & black "zipper" on the front of the chrysalis was where it emerged.....but no, it's just a bit of fanciful decoration it seems. I STILL don't know what its purpose is! It's crucial that the butterfly gets its legs out first to grab onto the empty shell with its prickly feet so it can hold its weight when the rest of it slides out.
