Loons are in the family Gaviidae, which in Latin means 'sea smew'

Loons are shy and generally do not like human contact. i was just lucky enough to capture this one before he ducked under the water.

They have an eerie call which many will know as they use it a lot in movies and in relaxation tapes.

Thank you all. you have that right they are thought to get close too. You can see I was not too close to him His red eyes are not there. I used my 30x zoom to get him. Had I gone to close under he would have gone and come up at the other end of the lake. I generally do not find many of them here in CT. Usually I see them more up in ME VT NH.
