Sorry, the keyboard can't spell "drought". Lol!

Thank you for your visit, Azkul. Usually we don't hear them until August, but this year they started up in June. Maybe they knew what kind of weather was coming. We have had 56 days so far of 100 degree plus temps, and the droght continues. No flowers and no butterflies this year.

The first I ever heard a cicada was when I went on a business trip to Chicago. I worked mostly through the night because I was fixing a computer network while the employees were away so I was trying to sleep during the day. These bugs were very loud and the people there said it was probably just 1 of them. I'll keep my crickets, thanks. They make a peaceful sound. I couldn't stand the sound of cicadas.

Thank you, Hellie 1, for your story about the cicadas. I did not realize they were in NZ.They are truly one of nature's surprises. I liked how I could see the rubbery tubes that were still moist in this exoskeleton.

Nice picture. I look forward to summer, you can always tell it's here when you hear the first cicada & they 'sing' well into evening. When my kids were younger it was a competition to see who could find the most empty shells, often coming home with jars of them! We're in New Zealand, by the way. Also, in summer when I walk through the park, you can spot the holes in the ground the cicada's have crawled out of. Isn't nature amazing. :o)

We just had the Brood X Cicadas emerge last summer. They are 17-year Cicadas, so we won't see them again until 2021! It was AMAZING to hear that SOUND! I had been afraid when I heard they were coming, but I really enjoyed the experience.

Thanks, Whittler. This one was stuck on the frame around the backdoor. They use those hooked feet to attach themselves and they emerge from this shell, leaving it behind.

Thanks, Zoya. I still haven't seen an adult cicada this year.

This is a great shot. I wish I could have found something like this when I happened upon my Cicada

And he certainly was loud :) Z

If you check out Zoya's gallery you'll see a great shot of the cicada after it emerges. We find these ghostly remnants stuck all over the place.
