Rancher Minniss

Rancher Minniss

This photo goes with the one dated 1859. This is a much later photo of Jaduthan Fuller Minniss, taken on his ranch on the plains of eastern Colorado. I think the woman is my aunt Florence. He and my grandmother had 12 children out there on that ranch. All lived to adulthood. The first home they built was one of the sod homes you might have read about or seen on the History Channel. Prior to ranching, grandpa was an Indian Agent for the Ute Indians, in Utah.

Brian, I've lost your email address, so you might send me one too.

Jim, that is probably a Stetson, the hat of the American West. I sure wish I had that one. I don't know what ever happened to it. My Uncle Jim had a big Stetson too. Maybe got it from his dad.

These old photos are great Gary. I have a couple myself but nothing like the age of this one. I am surprised that noone has mentioned the hat. It's a beauty.

Hello Andrew. I do have quite a bit of family history. I'm guessing that you are probably the same Andrew Minniss that I know. Send me an email and I'll send you some info.

I'm wondering if you know the much history of this rancher? Wanting to know if the rancher had any connections with family etc. from England? We have been meaning to research our family for years and never realy had the chance. Would be interesting to see if we did have a connection!

This is an incredible step back in time, Gary. Being adopted at birth I have no memories or images of my own ancestors. They are priceless and I enjoy seeing and reading others' stories. This sample is priceless - she was stylish while being gutsy with the long pants, and even he was rather a dandy in his own way. Excellent memory. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm sure he had many stories. I wish I'd known him when I was older. He died when I was 6. I remember him as a rather fierce old guy. Nobody messed with him except Grandma!

interesting about one of the aunts becoming a hairdresser, Gary. I'd say there is a connection there, perhaps this young aunt was willing to let her relative work on her hair. it looks good too.

Thanks all. I'd like to say I have a shoebox full of these, but, sadly, this is the only one. I do have one other of grandpa in the 1920's. I haven't seen it lately. Will try to dig it up.

oh, this is just great, Gary! You must be very happy to have these. Have never seen an oldie pic quite like this before, - with the young woman, all decked out in the rancher type clothing. Fabulous. The woman is very pretty and your grandfather is very distinguished looking and a good looking man. The woman looks as if she has had her hair "marcelled" (waved). Wonder if they did that procedure with the hair in those days? Right down to the dog behind them, this is just so great. thanks for sharing this.
