Flier above Silverton

It's a long way down there. A few buildings in Silverton (Colorado) are just visible in the top center.

Long, long ago, I was one of the ones up in the sky. I was a tail gunner on a B-29 and we did crash land one time. Fortunately, no one was injured. The airplane sure was torn up though. I was too young and dumb to let it bother me much at the time. I think I'd have a much different reaction now.

Thanks, Whittler. I'm glad I had the opportunity to take this shot. It is one of my favorites. My wife had a print made and framed it. It hangs in my office.

Silverton is at 9,000 feet elevation. The top of Kendall Mountain is above 13,000 feet. So, the distance in elevation is somewhat over 4,000 feet. I knew the road because I lived in Silverton. The air is thin at that elevation so the descent is rapid. The landing field is a big meadow outside of Silverton, Colorado. Only the best fliers were allowed to participate. My photo titled Flier is quite dramatic. There is a thumbnail of it on this page. It is the same guy just after he took off.

Beautiful - I wondered if you were behind him in another hang glider - now I know. How high did they jump from? I imagine they needed someone with a knowledge of backroads!

I didn't know this flier. I just hauled him and his friends to the top of the mountain in a jeep. My purpose was to get a good photo or two out of it.

I'm safely on the ground on top of Kendall Mountain. Look at my shot called "Flier" (it's over to the right of this photo). This is the same person. I'd never do it either, Alandra.

oh, excellent shot, Gary. What a view! Do you know the person in the hang glider? Could never do that, afraid of heights : )
