Underwater Scene

A tropical fish swims among the rocks and seaweed in these calm mid-morning waters.

I created the fish in Wings and used Bryce to create the underwater environment. The rocks are simple terrain objects that I smoothed in the terrain editor and put an underwater material on them, the seaweed are default objects, and the water overhead is a water plane with the carribean water material applied to it. To create the water look, I added fog (50,50) and haze (100%) and turned their color to blue.

The fish was created by starting with a sphere primitive object, which I molded into the fish shape. Wings is meant for low-poly, so it's still a little blocky, but the material (applied in Bryce) helps to make it look a little more realistic. The eyes were made with another pair of spheres, which had a copper-looking material added also in Bryce.

Great work, Brian. It looks as if it is a "Discovery" shot! I do hope Wings and Bryce are available here.

I don't think 3D art is cheating. It's just another way to create art and use the creative half of our brains. While I probably couldn't paint you a picture, I understand computers very well and thus can create a presentable image for you to view.

For all the traditional artists out there, I challenge you to learn a few 3D programs and give it a shot. If and when you do, please post them on The Lens Flare for all to see. I'm looking forward to it. You could also take a picture or scan your drawings and paintings and post them on TLF as well.

dead cool image, a friend of mine who is a painter reckons that this type of art is "cheating".

He dont even know how to switch a computer on never mind learn the intricacies of using complex programmes such as these.

I use photoshop myself and spend hours on end enjoying learning new tricks.

Thanks, Dud. I'll play with the lighting and see if adding more will help it out.
