The Loneliest Road

: The Loneliest Road; Highway 50, which runs through the center of the State of Nevada, is correctly called the "Loneliest Road in America." You can easily drive an hour, or more, without seeing another vehicle and it's a long way between gas stations. Both desolate and scenic. Our trip took us through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Nevada. We passed through Greensburg, Kansas, (pop. 1,400) about two weeks before the town was leveled by a category 5 tornado. Hi Doug, Great photo.. It makes me feel right at home LOL.. I like how the road fades into a little line leading your eyes to the mountains and the pretty sky. Back years ago all I had was a CB radio that would reach maybe 15 miles to call for help if someone was out there, now with cell phones and on-star traveling is much better...

Beautiful shot. I always like photos of long scenic roads where it looks like they are never going to end. I have never driven threw Highway 50. I panick for one block if their were no malls or gas stations or streets to pull into. Imagine how I'd be on this road.

I've been across US 50 in Nevada, Doug. This image shows a good sense of the isolation out there. (I was taking a shortcut towards Boulder, Colorado at the time.)

I was intrigued by the remains of abandoned homes during the crossing and caught myself dozing off so pulled to the side of the road. As I pulled off I thought to myself that if someone got in trouble out there it could be pretty bad.

I woke up to see two uniforms approaching my pickup truck from behind, hands close to their guns. They asked if I had been drinking and I answered, "only if water and cold coffee count."

They asked why I was on the side of the road and I told them honestly that I caught myself dozing in that long stretch and crossed the center line. After that scare I decided it was best to pull off for a bit. Apparently a car saw me go into the oncoming lane and reported it when they got to town.

They applauded my decision to stop where I did, told me to finish my nap and stop at the station in town for a free coffee refill if I needed it.

I was vastly relieved to know that lawmen DO keep an eye on that stretch. It was not a smart move to drive across there alone. Vicki
