Washington Artillery

Most of the land on the opposite side of the street from Jackson Square is reclaimed land. On this side of the street is Washington Artillery Park. Washington Artillery was a Confederate Civil War unit in New Orleans. They acquitted themselves well at Bull Run. On March 4, 1861, the Washington Artillery stopped campaign in Virginia temporarily to celebrate Mardi Gras. On April 24, 1877, the last federal troops from Reconstruction left New Orleans. The Washington Artillery gave them a 100-gun salute.
