Under the Mohaka

We went away for a conference and I was dissapointed as there were no great photo opportunites. That is until my husband Michael told me to stop the car on the way home so that we could walk under a bridge. The Mohaka Bridge is 96m above river level with a span of 278m. The walking platform is about 3m (maybe more) below the bridge which is very scary to walk on as its a long way down. We never realised till we got off it that the platform is no longer open to the public - oops.

Thanks for your comment Don. I nearly thought I had nothing to add to the "layers" contest then I remembered the layers in this bridge. Glad you like it. Sure makes my husband look small :-)

Hi Vicki and Tania. I haven't seen this photo on a bigger scale (too big to fit on my computer screen) but the real thing was extremely impressive! Yes Tania, this is the bridge on the Napier Taupo road. I've not been over the one on the Napier Wairoa road. I may have to visit it though.

BINGO! This is amazing, Lulu. The perspective is spot on, and your husband adds to the depth. I bet this is even better on a large scale print. The small details would be even more amazing!

Great Shot Lulu. Love the angles and the person framed in the center. Is this on the Napier Taupo road or the Napier Waiora road. They are both tall long bridges with simular names

Thanks Mel. Yes, its quite neat under the bridge. We did see sign saying that you weren't allowed to go under anymore. This is a photo as I was heading back to where you get back up to the road. Not sure why the platform was so "humpy" though. What an experience!

Hi Lulu, this is great. I never knew you could walk under it. I line the lines and crosses that draw you down to Michael. Perfect!

Thanks again Mary, Alandra and Talsi. The funny thing about this bridge is that the bridge itself is flat (as you can see in my other photo) but the platform has these big humps in it. It was a long way to the other side (there were a couple of planks missing down the other end so I never got quite to the end) and you had to walk up and down these hills in the platform. Not sure why they constructed it that way but I'm sure there is a logical reason. Oh, the figure in the photo is my husband Michael. He kind of looks like he is standing on that strut in the foreground don't you think? I never planned it that way. His feet were firmly on the platform. There is no mucking around when you are at that height!

Wow, you can just feel the height. And good job of showing scale with the figure in the photo.

Alandra from westcoast Canada on Apr 4, 2006 at 1:37 PM said:

seeing this one, definitely know I wouldn't be able to walk on that platform, as can't take that "open" type of construction, even on stairways. Very good shot.

Looks like the photo op would be

the only thing that would get me on that bridge! :) Nice shot.
