Trying to Lure me from the Nesting Site

While the Red-bellied woodpeckers were preparing their nesting site, I could hear them tapping away. When I returned the next day, to sit quietly and watch, they decided to try to distract me and one flew off while this one remained quietly perched on a nearby tree - soundless, until I went back inside my RV!

Thank you all. This one was in Miami the day before we left for a huge RV rally in Daytona last weekend. I saw a pair of Downy woodpeckers just before we left Ft Myers - I never knew they ranged so far south as I'm more familiar with them in Southwest Michigan.

I did have to tweak this a bit to get the color as the tree faced the morning sun - that's why the leaves are so bright. I'm not sure that the woodpecker wasn't trying to be incognito as it never made a sound while it perched there!

Beautiful close up. Nice leaf color off to the side to add depth.

Thank you, Alandra - he's definitely a Red-bellied - we had them in Michigan too, as well as the Red-headed variety. Your Northern Flicker is quite different in its markings, but I would sure like to see a pair!

beautiful bird, Vicki. Looks very much like our Northern Flickers, which used to be called Red Shafted Flickers. But I believe they are more grey around the neck area than these.
