My Cold Birdbath

: My Cold Birdbath; This is my homemade birdbath. It is mounted on a six inch schedule 40 metal pipe, then a car tire rim. The bowl is a cap from the power plant where I use to work. It is around three inches thick and four feet in diameter, and weighs four hundred pounds. I had to use a cherry picker to put it on the pipe. Then the top is made from some metal pump parts with those parts weighing around a hundred pounds. It is around five feet tall. So this is my 600 pound birdbath. I also have a water float valve from a swamp cooler that keeps it full of water. And last I have a submersible pump that pumps five gallons of water every minute. I broke up the ice for this shot so the pump could pump the water that wasn't frozen. I'm slowly working on putting rocks around the base and up the pipe. You can also see the light dusting of snow we got on the mountains.; Equipment:

Alan I would take a photo of the castiron one I leave out in the winter but it dont compare to this and I doubt anyones birdbath could possibly compete with this one.Great birdbath.

Hey Talsi and Karen, yep from the kids to a car hitting it will not effect it. Our grandchildren hang on the edge of it and pull themselves up to see the water all the time. The pipe it is mounted on was ten feet long, five feet of it is cemented in the ground and I even filled the pipe with cement. If a car hits it the car will loose lol.. Karen I really enjoy it when the temp gets low enough to freeze the water, that only happens maybe once or twice a year. I have always wanted to build something that will live long after I'm gone and this ended up being my project. I just need to get all the rocks cemented around it up to the bowl and I will be finished.

Hi Golda, Steve, Cindy, and Alex. Thanks so much for your fun comments. I forgot about it being really cold and slippery for some of you. Slippers was not a good choice ROFL.. Yep no grass yards around here, just nice dirt. I'm glad you all enjoyed my creation. It took a lot of digging to cement the pipe in the ground, then just a little welding. Then just a little work running the water and power to it.

More an artistic sculpture than mere birdbath! As Golda says, so incongruous to see the red dry earth which, even though it obviously wasn't, still looks hot, behind the icy birdbath.
